Card Sort

At Desmos, we love card sort activities and all the rich discussions we’ve seen them generate in classrooms over the years. So we’ve added a card sort tool to our Activity Builder that makes it even easier for teachers to create, deliver, and—most important of all—facilitate discussions around card sort activities. Get started with the video on the right, then dive deeper with the resources and tips below.

Happy learning!

Dashboard Features

Use the results view to track student progress. We’ve styled and color-coded the dashboard so you can see correct, incorrect, incomplete, and unsorted at a glance.

Click on an individual student to see the card sort from their perspective. Use the answer key overlay to instantly see which cards belong where.

The summary view shows your students’ most common sorting mistakes. Project one or more of these to help facilitate a class discussion.

PRO TIPS

We’ve seen productive card sorts with as many as 20 cards. Beyond that, things can get pretty overwhelming. Let the teacher (and students) beware!

For the best card sort experience, we recommend 2:1 computing (two students per one device). Just make sure they’re trading turns at the keyboard.

As teams of students finish, split them up and send them to other groups where they can discuss differences in thinking, or to help jumpstart a struggling group.
